[Suggestion] Filtering of Ad Content

  1. I'm not quite sure how the choosing of ad's works or if there even is such a thing and it is all simply random, however I've noticed recently some odd ads showing up such as "Entice Matures-Meet Mature Singles." For most other sites, this wouldn't be the worst, but seeing how EMC is meant to have a family friendly environment, I believe there should be someone going through and checking if ads are family friendly.

  2. +1.. on this very page I see this

  3. As far as I know, ads are provided by google, and so are related to what you do on the internet. Small childs wouldn't get these ads I beleve...
  4. Nope. Never went to any dating-based websites or searched anything like that. Most websites I go to are EMC or downloading software for my computer :p

  5. Oh, also in addition to this, I realize that a lot of the EMC's revenue likely comes from ad's, but again, with ad's like these, I don't believe it's morally correct to claim a family friendly environment. If a change in the way ad's are shown isn't possible, maybe add a disclaimer for the forums, or for forums, add a minimum age requirement for those who are attempting to sign up from here on out.
I.e., are you at least 13+ years of age? -check box-
  6. every time you visit a website, there are tracking cookies. Those tracking cookies are then used to show relevant ads. You dont have to have searched for what is showing up. It shows by what is done by Keywords and then sometime it will also link to ads shown on other sites.

If you want to fix your ads, i would suggest doing a Tracking Cookie clean to remove any on your PC. EMC Can only do so much, but its based off Keywords on your searches and sites.

For example i will look at cgTrader at buildings and it will take the Model keyword from that site and give me Character models, body part models, and all.

Ads do not have a age option as it comes from a pool of ads that are willing to pay for that ad slot.
  7. That would actually confirm it: People downloading sowtwere (aka are doing technical things with computers) are quite likely to be male, and I think also quite likely to be single, or, at least, not married. so: it tatally makes sence Google things you're interested in it, and so, puts ads of it on pages. Also, I don't know about you, but "arab beauties dating" doesn't sounds like a dating site to me... :p

    + What finch said :p
  8. Cleared cookies. Now I see Russian Facebook advertisements.
  9. Did you do it just browser? Coz a Antivirus removes them fully.

And even if you have cleared them, just from visiting Empire, you add new ones and thats where they come from.
  10. Just browser. I only use the built-in Windows anti-virus.
  11. *cough cough cough AD-BLOCK cough cough cough*
  12. windows version does not have the option to remove trackers.
  13. Oh the pane! Get it? Because windows have panes? Ehh? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    :(
  14. Our official stance is that dating is a perfectly normal subject for 13+ yr olds, which people agree that they are at least 13 when using the forums. We do not need to censor the fact that dating sites exists.

If parents hold different beliefs, then it would be the parents responsibility to filter their child's internet access, as well as it is the parents responsibility for monitoring their child's access if they allow a child younger than 13 access to the internet.

EMC does not collect age demographics, so we are not able to make decisions there either (nor are we going to start. I am trying to collect LESS private information, not more).

Now, dating sites are not meant to be used by minors, so to a minor, the ad is targeted incorrectly. But to our adult users, the advertisement may be correctly placed for them.

Ads target demographics. Sometimes Google gets this wrong and may serve you irrelevant content, but this is not within our power to control.

In the top right of every ad you should see a Blue X and a Triangle. following that link, you can end up at:

    https://www.google.com/settings/ads

Here you may ensure that Google has accurate information about you so it does not show inappropriate advertisements.

You may also opt out of interest based advertising here (found on the Google link):
    http://optout.aboutads.info/?c=2

EMC will block any sexually suggestive advertisement that is reported, but we do not have the capacity to monitor every ad that is placed on our site, as there are hundreds to thousands of potential ads.

If you find something sexually suggestive, please screenshot it and report it to me by PM and I will block it.

You may also feel free to use AdBlock. EMC doesn't care (we use it too!).
  15. andd the last sentence of aikar's statement.
I don't get ads unless incognito.

Granted right now I have a dating site ad on the bottom of my page :/ Either way, I never complain, I just block it and move on.

  16. I guess that's a good point. Google Ads are not JUST "what you are interested in" but also targets the content of the page.

This thread is now going to show a lot of dating site ads due to the content of the page, it considers the ad relevant to the content.

It's possible other threads used words that got considered dating related (ie: if someone mentioned mature in 1 post, and someone else said women, google does not realize these are from different contexts)
